Will be to note that floods are also ravaging Romania this year, a place with a per-capita income ca. US$5,000/year.

The Romanians have demonstrably got their shit far more together than the Americans. Still, one cabinet minister was pushed to resign at the very beginning of the crisis because of a delay in obtaining pumps. I wonder if we'll see any resignations in America.

One hears a lot about 'poverty' in the USA. The Romanians who have been hit the worst by the flooding have been mostly peasants, as in people who own small fields and work them with hand tools. Yet, somehow, the government has been able to provide them with temporary housing and supplies without their rioting or, as far as I've heard, raping anyone. Also no looting.

The whole thing reminds me of a line from The Power and the Glory, where the doomed priest asks the Communist boss, "If you hate the rich so much, why do you want the poor to be like them?"

How many Romanian peasants have 42" plasma TVs or laptops.

So no lavish French peasant lifestyles at the moment.

The present value must be inflated by the interest rate achievable over the coming years when they will be part of the EU. Otherwise, there's an arbitrage opportunity.

resignations in America by wiredog (4.00 / 1) #4 Fri Sep 09, 2005 at 08:56:43 AM EST
The FEMA Head looks to be on his way out.

Oh, and there was that Army undersecretary, a couple of years ago, who was fired for complaining that the Corps of Engineers was spending money on unneeded river locks instead of levees...

I thought he was fired because he was complaining that the CoE were not spending money on repairs contradicting the BushCo party line that "everything is fine".
