Pretty well, I think. This one ought to be an ascension.

Pros:
  • 2 /WoW in oilskin sack
  • Wallet of Perseus, +7 Bat from Hell, +5 assault rifle called Demogorgonbane, +5 GDSM, +5 t-shirt, +5 Whisperfeet, +4 ]CoP, +2 helm of telepathy (soon to be +5 after restore.)
  • Level 26, to be back up at 30 after restore and some inventory juggling.
  • -53 AC, once you count maxed out divine protection and natural protection.
Cons:
  • As a Doppelgänger, I can't use two weapons, which limits my melee damage quite a bit. Polymorph control was awesome at lower levels but it's lost much of its value at this point. Polymorphing into something cool like a giant shoggoth means giving up magic resistance, as rogues have no inventory source of MR, so I'm pretty much stuck in human form all the time. I can't even polymorph into a black dragon when it comes time to fight Rodney.

I have to say, I think firearms are a bit unbalancing. When you can fire 9 +5 bullets for an average damage of 27.5 apiece (which is about as much as Frost Brand hits for, IIRC,) you can wax very powerful mobs very fast. Demogorgon died in the first volley, as did Geryon, Dispater, and One-Eyed Sam. Which is good, because Demogorgon is a frickin' biznatch, and no way in hell (heh) I'm going to fight him without #twoweapon.

Anyway, I've so far finished off Vlad, the Quest, assorted side quests (such as Lawful Quest, Vecna, giant hall, the Castle [obviously,] the Black Market [shot it up like a crack addict, perhaps appropriately,]) dived to level 53 of Gehennom killing everyone along the way. I retreated back to my altar on level 39 to polypile my huge collection of loot, uncurse my stuff, make new holy water, and bless/enchant a backup unicorn horn. Note: having a gnoll shaman curse your +7 unicorn horn just as you're fighting Demogorgon for the first time sucks. I dealt with it by a) quaffing my emergency full-healing, b) shooting Demogorgon (and killing him,) and c) gunning the gnoll down like a dog before he could get another curse off. Then I forgot about the curse, fought a monadic deva, applied the horn to remove blindness, and made myself deathly sick. Time for another full healing. Argh!

But anyway, everything is stabilizing, and I'm planning to B?oGen G and Z before I dive next. Got three full magic markers left, heh, heh, heh....

I have to pass a giant troll and cross the Frozen Moat of Slippery Slush while dodging +5 Vorpal Olsmobiles.

Didn't see anything too special. A lot of this kind of thing:
All this against a backdrop of further exploration for energy sources at a time when we should be looking at safe, sane, renewable resources.
Which is to say, it's a liberal blog - one in which the majority of the posters are completely immune from the business and social concerns driving the other 95% of humanity - and we can expect little more than platitudes and pieties from the posters. I mean, bankind would eat that post without salt.

If I knew what slash'em was by CrocoStimpy (2.00 / 0) #22 Wed Feb 02, 2005 at 08:11:54 PM EST
then I would.

I can't play these games.  Last time I played a MUD was in '93.  I got too wrapped up in it and neglected my schoolwork.  Had to go cold turkey.  Same thing with Quake.

I forget that other people don't have the same problems I have with an inability to focus on the right things.  I can't just play something for a few hours and then walk away and attend to more important things.  It's all or nothing.  For the sake of my sanity, I choose nothing.

Sometimes I think I need to do the same thing with these online foramen.  I need to waste time here like I need a hole in my head.

no, the worst by rmg (2.00 / 0) #10 Wed Feb 02, 2005 at 06:05:36 AM EST
is getting blinded then walking over a place where you killed a cockatrice. when you search the ground to make an account of what's there, you touch the cockatrice. if you don't have gloves, it kills you.

Praying in Gehennom, getting your armor blasted off, and then getting touch-of-deathed by an arch-lich. That's a hell of a way to learn not to pray in Gehennom.

Ooh! by CrocoStimpy (2.00 / 0) #18 Wed Feb 02, 2005 at 04:16:56 PM EST
Praying in Gehennom, getting your armor blasted off, and then looking away from the screen and seeing your supervisor standing there, and then getting touch of deathed by by a dismissal notice he's been writing during the past 15 minutes while watching you play nethack instead of getting work home.  Then, going home and telling your wife that you've been fired, and getting touch-of-deathed again by the divorce papers she drew up while you were playing nethack to 3 AM instead of getting "tender" with her or watching the kids.

But the coup de grace - spending the last of your savings on a flight to San Francisco, catching a cab to the Golden Gate Bridge to throw yourself off, you no-job-having wife-left-you loser, only to discover that they've installed suicide barriers, stepping back in disbelief from the edge, and getting nailed by a mac truck.

Helluva way to die.  Trust me, I know.

You suddenly yearn for your distant homeland.

Fortunatley for me, it's impossible to practice the violin while playing nethack.
