Hi folks,

I am buying some beer today. Any recommendations?

I enjoy quite bitter beers, but my wife prefers stuff with less bite (her favourite is Dos Equis amber.) As for me, I'll drink all kinds of stuff, from fruity lambic to german liqui-bread.

I suggest a variety pack from your local by georgeha (5.00 / 1) #1 Fri Oct 10, 2003 at 01:57:28 PM EST
microbrewery. I don't know where you live, but in Rochester I can get Saranac, Sam Adams and Ithaca variety packs.

as a matter of fact by nathan (3.00 / 0) #2 Fri Oct 10, 2003 at 02:05:10 PM EST
I live in Rochester too!

I've had good luck with Saranac, so maybe I'll try Ithaca?

Saranac? Ithica? by BadDoggie (5.00 / 1) #4 Fri Oct 10, 2003 at 02:31:19 PM EST
Try Brooklyn if you can get it. They have one of the best Pils beers in the states, and their "Weisse" is damned good, even if their grammar ain't.

Yes, I'm in Germany and I do actually miss some American beers. But Dos Equis??! <boggle>

woof.

Dos Equis... by nathan (3.00 / 0) #6 Fri Oct 10, 2003 at 02:44:30 PM EST
My wife isn't a big drinker. I'm looking for a compromise we can both live with, and so far, this is the best one.

I guess I could just buy two cases, but to be honest I'm drinking more wine these days myself. Hence the diary about the pedestrian act of buying beer.

would be your best bet for Ithaca Variety packs.

I noticed that Weggies now has some Southern Tier, I almost picked up their mild, until I saw that Saranac had HefeWeizen on sale.

Whereabouts in Rochester do you live, i'm near Cobbs Hill.

I love the city Toronto, but not sooo much its university.

How are you doing? And yes, it's the same nathan (and, fyi, I also played quite a lot of basteroids when I was in TOronto.)

I always found your comments interesting.

I can understand not liking U of T... most people I know thought it was a big student factory and found it very impersonal.

that's my take on it by nathan (3.00 / 0) #24 Sat Oct 11, 2003 at 10:49:00 AM EST
The education isn't even really all that good.

I'm starting to feel as though I'll never be happy in public universities. More than anything else, it's the bureaucratic inefficiency. (For instance, while I was working as a TA, I was without a contract for two months, meaning I didn't get paid for three months, meaning that I ate a lot of ramen and lost twenty pounds.) I can't recommend private universities in all cases, but although I'm borrowing money again to live in the USA, I'm getting 10x as much out of my education.

How about you? I just checked out the new website today - looks neat, and I like the new game.

similar experience by spacejack (6.00 / 1) #26 Sat Oct 11, 2003 at 12:30:17 PM EST
Right after high school I originally went to Waterloo for math/CS, and even though I was in the co-op program which was good, I found the university experience itself was incredibly impersonal without much of a place for my interests or developing my skills. I also got kinda screwed by beaurocratic rules for a couple of co-op jobs, and found I could get more interesting work on my own (granted I was lucky to be a computer geek back then).

Now, I had always debated with myself whether or not I should go to school for a technical (math/cs) education and stick to art on my own time or vice versa. But I was having such a poor time at Waterloo I decided to give the reverse a shot. As a result, I wound up at the Ontario College of Art which was the exact opposite -- rather than being a big university in a small town, I was at a small college in a big city with a lot of freedom to choose my own program (I'm originally from Toronto so that helped too).

But it was fundamentally different in that you pretty much taught yourself; the instructors were often a great resource but I learned just as much or more from the other students. And to this day, I still socialize and work with many of them. The workload was a lot easier than a university, so that gave me the time to work throughout the year and gain contacts & experience. I guess I was more cut out for the kind of place where your career and direction are up to you.

Anyway, I've done a lot of different things, travelled a lot, lived (barely) off my painting for a year or so once, worked myself nearly to death at a couple of video game startups, and freelanced in a variety of multimedia. I've finally taken a full-time 'permanent' (the word still scares me to type :) job for the first time in my life, and despite butting heads with some of those from the corporate environment, I must say it's not bad having a more or less stable lifestyle for once. I'll see how it goes :)

Chimay by lb008d (5.00 / 1) #5 Fri Oct 10, 2003 at 02:35:40 PM EST
Red and Blue labels are my favorites. I also recently started drinking New Belgium's 1554 and like it a lot. I also drink their Abbey Ale when I don't want to spend a ton of $$$ on Chimay :-)

I feel bad for our UKian brethren, stuck under an inefficient government ruled by an incompetent hereditary ruling class. I can't imagine what that's like, but it must surely suck - georgeha

Your friend's live must really be going a bit odd if you he wants to swap with me - you do he does read my diaries, right?

Anyway, on the subject of beer, I foresee the consumption of a large amount of wine and alcopops tonight, together with good food and cheesecake, with a few hours dancing thrown in.

Bloody work by Cloaked User (5.00 / 2) #20 Sat Oct 11, 2003 at 08:30:37 AM EST
You have one busy week, one piddling little busy week, resulting in a single all-nighter, and suddenly BLAM! you've a stack of HuSi diaries to catch up on that you weren't even aware of.

Anyway, I am now cognisant of Dr X's little problem. Sounds like a right little situation, too - can't say I envy him that one.

Mind you, it's somewhat similar to one I was in 6 years ago or so. I was busily making the transitoin from one relationship to the next, as you do, and as sometimes happens there was a short period of, ah, shall we say overlap? I was determined that the previous one was over, though, and as it turned out so was she. (We didn't actually see each other during this period, so I had assumed that we were through - nothing had been said.)

My new gf and I had bought tickets to a concert, when it ocurred to me that my ex might well be there, so I warned NewGF. Well, it turned out that Ex was the exact same girl that NewGF had been telling me about, the one who had been a rival for teh attentions of a previous bf, resulting in much heartache and bad feeling all round...

We took the easy route out of that one, and just gave the concert a miss. It was soon after that that I got round to discussing matters with Ex, to find that we had both come to the same decision independently.

That's the simplified version, of course - at the time, both I and Ex were living with other exs, and neither of us were entirely disentangled from our respective exs (which was why she'd decided we were through...).

Ha! That would be too easy by Dr H0ffm4n (5.00 / 1) #28 Mon Oct 13, 2003 at 01:54:11 AM EST
Dr X never does the simple thing. The mistake that Dr X made on Friday night was not a dalliance with the ex mentioned in the previous diary.

As a point of information, that ex is ex from 15 years ago.

I shall consider diarising the weekend's happenings when I've worked out a slant that does not cast meDr X in a completely unfavourable light.

Duvel is also very good.
